Curtains for Feminism?'
7pmAs an all-female theatre company, Hecate pride themselves on producing theatre for casts made up of solely women, without typically ‘feminist’ subject matter. But what should theatre for women really be about? Hecate present an evening asking just that – featuring speakers from varying backgrounds in theatre-making and performance, plus a Q&A; with the audience. Why is ‘feminism’ such a scary topic to discuss nowadays and what is its relevance when it comes to creating theatre? A lively, engaging evening awaits, mixing discussion and opinion with comedy, poetry and music. Have your say. Speakers include: Sharon Clark (Literary Producer, Bristol Old Vic), Elf Lyons (Comedian), Kate Williams (Performance Poet) £4 - Wed27Mar2013

Crafted combining the beauty of acoustic guitar, orchestral influences and pure vocals Ben’s music is an expression of truth, love and hope. His ability to turn experience into musical expression has already won him great critical acclaim during shows throughout 2012, and he was voted 'Best Male Solo Artist' at the People's Music Awards in 2011. He is described as an “awesome talent”, “mesmerising” and “having the ability to create beauty from the air around him, weaving with his fingers the multicoloured blanket upon which his words will fall.” "Ben Maggs is one of the best singer/songwriters to come out of the West Country in ages…a true troubadour who defies the confines of genre classification. His trademark acoustic guitar lays down the bedrock for a truly unique plaintive vocal style that simply oozes pathos and emotion. Cardinal support from your Evie Woods
7pm"Formed whilst at BIMM University in Bristol together, Cardinal are a four piece alternative rock band with a feisty female drummer keeping the beat on the backline. Although new to the Bristol music scene, they've already made an impact on local audiences, with their riff-driven songs and energetic stage presence. Versatile lead singer and rhythm guitarist Matt McGuinness is also the bassist in the critically acclaimed band Glass Wing Pilot, who Kerrang and Big Cheese are championing this year as a band to watch for 2013. Lead Guitarist and pitch perfect backing vocalist Mike Squire (21) from Derby, states his performance highlight as playing at the legendary Rock City, with the opposite end of the spectrum being a gig at Chatsworth Park in his teen Glam Rock band to a thousand Scouts... he still has a sparkly toggle! Mike is also a film score composer, with this influence bringing a melodic sensitivity to these young grunge rockers. Hannah Layhe (25) drums and backing vocals, hails from The Isle of Man, has played the Islands Bay festival, sharing the bill with some 80's greats and Calvin Harris, toured Canada with the band Miss Quincy, supported Johnny Burrell, Midge Ure and Tom McRae and is on hand as a qualified nurse if the mosh pit gets out of control. Danny Messaggiero, Bass has supported popular bands such as 4 Year Strong and is the lead singer in the pop-punk band The Action Plan. The band begin recording their debut EP in Spring 2013." The other band is Evie Woods http://www.eviewoods.com/ They are a 3 piece and should be fine using what we have.. her bio is: "Evie Woods was formally a solo artist, performing her own take on acoustic folk throughout the northwest at a number of venues. However, it was when she moved to Bristol that she found a handful of musicians that helped push her songwriting to what it is today. Their new sound has its roots firmly in acoustic folk, with soaring vocal melodies, intricate guitar parts and percussion to compliment. ? ?Their musical influences include Bon Iver, The Smiths, Laura Marling, Joy Division, Midlake, Jim Moray and Grizzly Bear. Evie has played a number of venues in Bristol, including The Thekla, The Exchange and Mr Wolfs but she is now looking to further spread her music throughout the UK. ? Evie's debut EP is constantly gaining interest, and so she plans to get back into the studio in 2013 to showcase what else she is more than capable of achieving".£2 - Wed17Apr2013
