So bristol is all about the food and the drinks, and the cafe stops are no exception. Today the anorakgirl went back to a new place she had tried out in the week by St. Nicholas’ market: a new vintage space with boutique: Yesterday’s Clothing, cafe in Today’s Coffee and music venue space in Tomorrow’s music. So finally we have an alternative, independent cafe stop for when you’re in that middle part of the old town where you’re only options before had been chain franchises. Where is it? What is it called? Well this perfect space of chesterfield leather sofas and wing back chairs (perfect for reading), old lady’s chintz lampshades, reworked kitsch rural scenes and darling mismatched afternoon tea china is: THE BIRDCAGE (28 Clare St.) And the best part about it, even if that wasnt enough already, is the cupcakes. now i know its all about the cupcakes lately but these really do deliver behind the cute looks and quirky names, once you actually get passed the pretty icing, the cake part is amazing and actually tastes of something beyond bland cake. so far gone with the cookies n’cream and blueberry haven…. And to top everything off I adore the illustrations by Alex Lucas…make time for another cafe stop.

There might be a Metro, Evening Post, perhaps a Guardian left on the table of your typical Bristol cafe if you’re lucky. Never before until stepping foot inside The Birdcage on Clare Street have I found a Playboy. The edition on my table was from April 1987, featuring playmate of the month Anna Clark.

It’s little and surprising features like this from the fertile mind of 24-year-old owner Gorgina Haslam, that make The Birdcage one of the most significant and best new openings in Bristol city centre this year.

The Birdcage’s offering is described on flyers as “Yesterday’s clothing, today’s coffee, tomorrow’s music”, a triumverate of cool that starts at 10am with a flat white and a pastry, ends at 10pm with the last notes of an acoustic troubadour, and in between can take in browsing of the rails in one corner featuring clothes a good deal older than the magazines dotted around.

When I visited on Thursday afternoon, well-dressed trendy young things were already populating the space that was once a bank and has the gift of a large ceiling and huge windows, flooding the L-shaped room with natural light.

Why hang one lampshade from a light fitting when nine will do? Why put art on the wall when you can put up bicycles? And always match a mural painted on one wall with bespoke wallpaper pasted onto another.

Enjoying my coffee from Bath’s Easy Jose and Bakewell tart from Crumpet Cakes of Southville, I sank into one of the battered leather Chesterfield chairs. Sandwiches come from Soughdough cafe in St Nic’s Market, while the choice of the stronger stuff here includes ale from Cornwall’s Flat Cap Beers.

Populated by the likes of Walkabout, All Bar One and Wetherspoon’s, this area of Bristol is not the obvious place for an offering such as The Birdcage. But it will act as an ideal pitstop for Start The Bus, Mr Wolf’s and the Big Chill, also nearby, or be just as ideal for a trip to soak up its own charming delights, and I’m not just talking about Anna Clark.

“The hangout of choice for the arty party and style set”, proclaims the website of brand new venue The Birdcage – “a thriving creative scene and social hub in the heart of the city”. It’s great to see 28 Clare Street once again occupied, and by something a little different to the chain venues that make up most of its surroundings.

On their opening afternoon of Saturday, September 8th, a band had taken to the small stage area while customers relaxed with a coffee on the old Chesterfield sofas, or browsed the range of vintage items available for purchase, each of which is hand selected by the Birdcage team.

Promising “yesterday’s clothing, today’s coffee and tomorrow’s music”, it’s the sort of quirky venue that you’d expect to be more at home elsewhere in the city, but which already seems to be popular.

The Chesterfields sit alongside vintage china, a wall decorated with bicycles, and various other odds and ends which lend a homely, personal air to the venue.

At one end of the room is a large pull down projector screen, with plans to organise both evening screenings and afternoon films for parents and their small children.

A range of 18 loose leaf teas comes from Jeeves & Jericho – and it’s the Turkish Chunky Apple, which includes rosebuds (I’m addicted to rose…) that I’ll be trying on my next visit. Coffee is supplied by Bath’s Easy Jose Coffee – winners of the South West Barista Of The Year award – and is all traceable back to the farms in which it was cultivated. The Birdcage use 100% Arabica beans, and for those who – like me – stick to decaf, you’ll be pleased to know that the Swiss Water Process is used on their decaf coffee, meaning that it’s 100% chemical free.

Fentimans and Bottle Green soft drinks are also available, with those wanting something a little stronger also being able to take advantage of the offer of a selection of beers and wines.

While The Birdcage do not have their own kitchen, they offer a range of sandwiches and cakes to their clientele, made offsite and using local suppliers. Sandwiches, bagels and filled croissants are all courtesy of the Sourdough Cafe, while cakes and bakes are provided by the fantastic Crumpet Cakes. The range will change every few weeks, and the team are open to feedback: tell them what you’d like to see on offer, and you may see it behind the counter! I enjoyed a huge sandwich of goats’ cheese, beetroot and spinach: perfectly fresh and a great Friday lunchtime treat.

It’s a fantastic venue with something for everyone, and I’ll definitely be heading back for more than just a takeaway sandwich when I have more time. What I’m possibly most excited about is that it’s the perfect place to meet for an evening tea or coffee – a great place to spend time catching up with friends when you don’t fancy a pub or restaurant trip. Definitely recommended.

Working from her Bristol studio, Alex Lucas has been causing an almighty stir on the art scene with her quirky illustrated characters and iconic Window Shop destination. We’re huge fans of her work and were absolutely delighted when she agreed to design bespoke art works for The Birdcage which she hand-painted on the interior for us. We love that Alex has just designed the £5 note for the Bristol Pound, a local currency designed to support our city’s independent businesses, high streets and community. Find out more at lucas-antics.com or come along to The Birdcage and see her inspiring work for yourself!

This season’s Fashion Week catwalks were awash with vintage inspiration, from Fifties Americana at Prada and Marc Jacobs (think pencil skirts and pin curls) to English heritage styling at Burberry, Paul Smith and Erdem. Work this shooting-weekend chic by adding some vintage tweed
